Da ich mich mit dem Spiel nun näher beshcäftigen möchte, lagere ich das aus der Duskussion um die polnischen Spiele aus.
Game topic's
Clanarchy: dark fantasy roleplay is a game in which, together with your friends, you participate in creating interactive stories about the adventures of characters you play. The background of our story is free humans' struggle with the Darkness in a world which was destroyed by demons ages before. Now, out of its ashes, a new culture has been born, a culture full of dark mysticism. Hundreds of scattered clans, belonging to one of four great – Free Tribes, unite to resist the power of wraiths and their servants.
Sit with your friends by the table to enjoy the game in which the board and monitor's screen is replaced by your imagination.Play a free human resisting the Darkness.Together with your friends, experience adventures in a cruel world full of demons and dark magic.
Characters
Hundreds of free clans have made an alliance of Four Tribes in order to oppose the Darkness together. In Clanarchy you will play a member of one tribe, choosing one of many characteristics for the free clans' archetypes.
For example, you may be a suspicious hanseatic inquisitor with great power and influence; a tattooed Soldat broodslayer who paints their face with blood of killed werewolves; a looter from Technoclan who rummage through the machine cemeteries in search of the artifacts of ancient times; an exorcist from the Brotherhood of Ritualists who alone can challenge a powerful demon.
Your character ended its education long time ago – you start your game being an experienced specialist. Together with other experts you create a group summoned to fulfill a specified task. Therefore your aim is to create together a dramatic and vivid story of how your characters struggle to complete the given task.
- Be a specialist, respected for their knowledge and skills. Forget about the system "from zero to hero" – here you start with an expert.
- Be a part of a group summoned to fulfill a specified task.Choose a character from one of Four Free Tribes and from highly diverse archetypes.
Dark fantasy in Clanarchy
From a typical fairytale fantasy we removed all races except for humans and the world of might and magic we twisted with a comic touch of horror motifs. It allowed us to use the ambience and motifs intended for adult audience which you are perfectly familiar with in movies, games and books: cruel and vivid scenes of battles, sensual and erotic, brutal monsters and pictures of epic terror.
The aim of the setting is to provide your adventures with suitable esthetics – where realism must give way to comics. It is a bit trashy, I agree, like the whole pop culture is, but what a kick to play it gives! Dark fantasy in our game gives you a clear sign: in a world where demons live, even the temples of the great ancestors are defiled with the Darkness. The world is not black and white: and that concerns your character as well as most of the characters you will encounter.
- Play in the world of humans and monsters. But be careful – they are very easy to confuse.
- Feel the comic dark fantasy: mystic rituals, cruel enemies and sullen scenery. Kids, time to sleep!
- Expect tricks straight from horror movies.
The world from bricks
The place of action is Raize, the only land you can live in, as they say. Beyond, there are lands devastated by war, encompassed by Darkness and its wraiths.
Nobody knows what caused the annihilation of the ancient ones or when that happened. Their world disappeared from the pages of history and from people's memory – nobody knows how the machines in the cemeteries work, how to turn them on and what they were used for. As long ago as the oldest clan's chronicles date back to, free clans were surrounded by demons and ruins of the ancient world: deserted steeple towers of cathedrals, burned glass skyscrapers and rotten factories. On the ashes of the remote splendor the new civilization was born.
The only existing state in Raize was created by Ebionites, a sect of powerful occultists allied with wraiths. Today their Emperor rules almost the whole surviving world and is one of the greatest enemies of the free clans. The concept of freedom, solidarity and common resistance to the threat of Darkness is shared among the union of Free Tribes which your characters belong to. Beyond the enclaves, in dark forests and on barren wastelands the broods are hiding: worshippers of forbidden cults, lunatics and the cursed. Raize is a wild and untamed land where wraiths, beasts and humans all live.
Clanarchy represents a relatively new and unexploited genre of fantasy: a world of might and magic which exists on the ashes of ancient civilization. Your character with a sword in their hand or a spell upon their lips will run into ancient necropolises of technology, deserted crumbling buildings around which a clan set its seat or the ruins of cathedral cities, broken towers of which still reach the sky.
In our box signed Clanarchy you will find the building blocks of various genres. You can rearrange them and build exactly what you find most thrilling. The setting was created in such way as to enable players to choose their favorite motifs while still maintaining a coherent story. Thus, playing Clanarchy again and again you can always create your stories in different settings.
- Don't let the Emperor gain control over all lands in Raize;
- Rest on your sword in the shadow of monumental ruins of forgotten civilization.
- World from bricks provides you with unlimited topics and settings. Choose what you like most. Flying beasts, cursed items, sword fights and spells. Or perhaps you'd like a bit of post-apocalypse: pneumatic crossbows, intriging machine cultists and exploring ancient ruins?
Free Tribes
Free Tribes are communities which did not yield to Ebionite Domination and for three centuries have resisted the servants of the Darkness. The permanent threat made the four Tribes forge an alliance within the Omam Union. Creating the Union was the beginning of the new times, which have lasted to this day.
The four Free Tribes do not share common territory. They consist of hundreds of clans scattered all over the Raize. The bigger ones with tens of thousands members are the residences of bosses, administrative bodies of the Union, as well as important trade points for all amiable clans. There are places where merchants travel to, important decisions and transactions are made in. They are havens for humans because they are always protected by many armed warriors.
Every character you play in a story will belong to one of four Free Tribes.
Hansa:
Ladies and gentlemen from Hansa are well known for their good taste and desire to live in wealth. In spite of sublime manners, innate elegance and attachment to appearance, Hansians are famous for their ruthlessness and cruelty. Every family continuously competes with the others and fights over spheres of influence and market. Their hierarchy of clients and patrons provides protection to the weaker by the wealthy. The most well off aristocrats become paterfamilias – authoritarian bosses controlling many clans and having thousands of servants who are willing to fulfill their every wish and whim.– Elegant, charming and wealthy;
- Organized in a system of patrons and clients resembling the mafia;
- They control the market and the mail; the most important posts are held by them;
- Leaders, plotters, organizers, visionaries and inspirers of change;
Technoclans
They resemble a corporate union of experts from various fields. Technoclans are resentful of their position and they claim that their source of power will come from equipment they constructed using the technology of pressure difference. A Technoclaner is well acquainted with constructing various equipment and does not hesitate to use advanced technology in everyday life. Looters search ruins of destroyed cities and machine cemeteries to find artifacts of the ancient ones that obtain stunning prices on the market. In order to determine the status of a Technoclaner one must take a good look at their belt buckle or buttons – and recognize if they come from the ancient world or not.– Pragmatic, reliable, striving for perfection in their craft;
- They love technical gadgets and use pneumatic weapons;
- They extract raw materials and produce equipment;
- Good crafters, technologists, constructers, disciplined soldier
Brotherhood of Ritualists
In their fortified monasteries, members of the Brotherhood search for knowledge about wraiths and the Shaderealm, to expose any weak sides of the enemy. It is said that they summon demons to train in killing them and that they allow themselves to be possessed by demons to harden their will. They hide their faces behind ritualistic masks and occult paintings. They don't wear masks all the time but they always have them – the masks are an indication of their status and are used in rituals. In Brotherhood there is a strict hierarchy, strict manners and very formal etiquette. Expressing emotions is perceived as the lack of control over one's own body and improper behavior or violation of the etiquette is a serious offence in this Tribe.– Calm, fearless and mysterious;
- Experts in dark mysticism and fighting with wraiths;
- In their occult experiments they are on verge of disgrace;
- Warlocks, exorcists, wraith hunters;
Soldat companies
They can be found everywhere where fights and bloodbaths take place. Almost all their life they devoted to master fighting skills and to battling against the enemies of the Omam. Therefore they are the best fighters among the Free Tribes. They manifest their individuality through their clothing and behavior. The most characteristic traits of the members of Soldat Companies are their eccentric appearances and their foul language. They carefully observe old customs that require cherishing the fame of the Company's insignia and oblige each Soldat to seek revenge on anyone who hurt their family or friends.– Proud, tough and bold;
- Organized in a system resembling military democracy;
- They manifest their freedom with clothes and behavior;
- Ruthless warriors who are hired as soldiers by the wealthier clans of the Union.
Technology
The demise came so long ago that, if not for the ruins of rust-eaten skyscrapers and remains of the old civilization, nobody would believe that in the past the world achieved its evolutionary climax. The existence of the old world is still remembered by the bold looters – daredevils who search machine cemeteries and ancient towns, and who provide the aristocracy with artifacts of the foregone era.
Each clan resembles an isolated engineering guild which jealously protects their own supplies: access to raw materials, workshops and constructors. The technology of the ancient ones fell into oblivion and the Union's weakness and the structure of clans hamper the improvement of the advanced technology. Nobody is able to build the firearm and electricity, computers and internal combustion engines are unknown. Production of good steel or even an oil-fueled lighter are great challenges. It is Technoclans and machines' cultists who became pioneers in the field of creating and spreading technology. The knowledge of some physical laws together with the mystical doctrines enabled them to initiate exceptional development of mechanics, especially concerning pneumatics. Basing their craft on the law of pressure difference of gases and liquids, in their workshops they create weapons and equipment improving the quality of life of the clan: pneumatic crossbows, water pumps, sluices or gas-fired heating.
The best among the constructors discover the correlation between matter and Magic and are able to create highly complicated machines: strutting manned mechanoids or exoarmor united with a being. These are only the exceptional items and prototypes which are to serve as a bonus to your sessions without violating the integrity of the world.
- Assume the technology is at the average level of the might and magic world, where the outstanding constructors and machine cultists are able to create exceptional and highly complicated machines.
- Wear an exoarmor or control with your friends a Technoclan's mechanoid. Fight machines brought to life by the worshippers of Darkness.
- See the mystical side of technology: the technomance artifacts and items animated by the power of wraiths or blood of mortals.
Game mechanics
Creating the game, we adopted three rules of mechanics:
- Speed and intuitiveness: as little as possible mathematical operations. No optional rules. All the confrontation mechanisms work the same way no matter if the character is chasing an Ebionite spy, quarrels with hanseatic paterfamilias or is during a bloody battle with a werewolf. Facilities for gamers such as description of abilities on the character sheets. No tabs with dozen of situational modifiers. Operating with the limited 10-sided dice pool.
- Playability: first act, then tune the rule. The mechanics should help in the game, provide fun and not be in the way. Every rule is thought through mainly with reference to the player's satisfaction and to the possibility of implementing it during the game. The player is allowed to declare any action and the mechanics help them to realize it. The mechanics doesn't reflect the physics of the world but it is a tool in the hands of the player in order to twist and actuate the game and to solve conflicts in an exciting way.
- Supporting the setting: rules must support Clanarchy's atmosphere and its assumptions. Mechanical bonuses for characters that play according to the setting. Special rules based on the film tricks used in horror movies, focusing on the meaning of fear and on the manifestation of Dark scenes. Fast, gore and comic-like fights. Including the influence of mysticism of the world in texts. Widely explained rules on dark magic.
